Rolex 1665 Double Red Seadweller Mk4 (DRSD)
The Rolex DRSD has secured its spot as the quintessential diver’s watch. Totally purpose built to reach the deepest depths the ocean has to offer; it is the very first reference designed with a Helium Escape Valve (HEV) to release any gasses captured inside as the diver makes the ascent back to surface. One might argue that the ref 1665 is built with even more intention than the Submariner.
Today, the DRSD is highly collected and remains as one of the bookmark references for any serious collection of vintage Rolex. Iconically accentuated by its double lines in red print, the DRSD is unmistakable.
A picture speaks a thousand words and few Mk4 DRSD’s are as exemplary as this example – it’s a cut above the rest. Spent its entire life in Japan and only recently unearthed. Evidenced by the thoroughness of documentation since leaving the authorized retailer, it’s no secret the Japanese are widely known as some of the finest caretakers of their possessions.
The condition of this ref 1665 DRSD Mk4 is remarkable. The strikingly attractive custard patina dial is a sight to behold and undoubtedly a standout amongst other DRSD’s. The completely matching original hands and naturally aged insert compliment the total appearance.
There was once upon a time when Rolexes were not quick sellers. There were no “wish lists” from clients and clients could pretty much have what they wished. This example is a testament to that where finally in 1988, well over a decade since its production, to find its first owner. Quite possibly adjusted for a decade’s worth of inflation, it’s original price hangtag of 257,000 Yen still remains – the AD might have made out well by hanging onto this inventory.
A Mk4 DRSD is surely not the rarest reference but it’s not until you really dissect through all the examples, you realize how difficult it is to find them in model condition. There’s nothing ordinary about this extraordinary DRSD.
