Rolex 1655 Explorer II Mk1
The Rolex ref 1655 Explorer II is one of the most requested references – so much so, even the modern-day Explorer II pays tribute to it. With unmistakably distinctive features including a steel 24-hour bezel and bright colored 24-hour hand, it is widely known in the community as “Orange Hand” or “Steve McQueen” even though there is not links to him ever wearing one.
This spectacular example is what I consider a “true” Mk1. Other than the noted Mk1 dial variant with straight hands this also has the Mk1 bezel - the numerals are situated closer to the inner bezel or crystal, only seen in the earliest range of the ref 1655. Majority of the straight hand variant you see are with Mk2 bezels, making this particular example very exciting to see.
More importantly, the condition is benchmark. Originally from Northern Spain, according to the words of the original owner’s family it was a cherished piece by the late owner, spending majority of its life living inside a bank vault and worn only a handful of times.
This has to be one of the nicest Rolex 1655 Mk1 orange hand in recent times and, dare I say, the best example I have ever seen. It is as exceptional as they come. Collectors who are serious about preservation and condition of their pieces, this example represents the top realm of its class.
