Omega 2915-3 Speedmaster
Like the Daytona, Submariner or even 911, the Omega Speedmaster is one of those very watches that even today, much of its core DNA is still relevant in the watch. You pick one up and it’s no mistaken that it’s a Speedmaster – it is what makes it a truly timeless design.
Beginning in 1957, Omega birthed the Speedmaster with its first reference 2915. It went through a few iterations during those first 2 years most notably with a steel bezel and broad arrow hands and ending in 1959 with the -3 iteration where some still had the design of the -1 and -2 but most came with a design change – a black Base 1000 bezel and Alpha hands. This changed the entire look of the watch and created the basis for the modern Speedmaster.
It is not to be mistaken what we have here is not considered normal condition. Sold in January of 1959 in Venezuela, if you have been on the hunt for an early Speedmaster then you may be fully aware It’s not easy to find an exemplary example. This 2915-3 is simply breathtaking.
The flawless Oval O dial still retains its brightness and rich in color that is not often seen – there’s no dullness here. All its original radium has warmed to a beautiful hue but remains all intact. The 1664xxxx case is worn over the years but remains strong. The Base 1000 bezel is deep black in color with very minimal wear. A later mid-60’s original 7912 bracelet with 6 endlinks have been added to compliment the watch. The watch also comes with an Omega Extract of Archives.
There’s not much to critique on this exemplary 2915-3 – it is as good as they come. Some might argue that demand for Speedmasters are weak at the moment but to best honest, demand is the least of your worries, it’s the limited supply of exceptional examples that’s weak and will always be scarce. Today’s market offers an opportunity to obtain something exceptional and scarce at off-peak prices – tomorrow’s market you might look back and say, I had the bird in hand.
