Rolex 18206 Day-Date Platinum “Golden Salmon”
“Men who guide the destinies of the world wear Rolex watches” was a genius and impactful marketing campaign in the 50’s through the 60’s centered around the Rolex Day-Date - often referred to as the “President”.
Introduced in 1956, the Day-Date is, for many, the model most closely associated with Rolex. It has been worn by numerous influential figures throughout the 20th century and continues to represent the brand’s flagship model. Aside from a particular few example, Day-Dates were produced exclusively in precious metals appearing in a wide range of dial variations, including some unusual and rarely seen configurations that make collecting them particularly interesting.
This particular example is especially interesting as it is produced in the most precious metal of them all, Platinum. It is easily recognizable by its smooth bezel ring that is most commonly associated with this metal. Some even don a domed smooth bezel ring but I find the flat bezel as seen on this example to be a much more attractive execution. To further enhance the appeal of this piece is the very rarely encountered “Golden Salmon” dial, fitted with non-serif Roman numerals and tritium lume plots and hands.
The platinum case remains extremely well-preserved still highlighting all its hallmarks in an ultra-sharp manner. In addition, the caseback still retains its original green reference sticker designating Rolex Day-Date 18206. Together, the watch is dressed on a full Platinum president bracelet with 21 links and signed hidden clasp in beautiful condition with virtually no stretch.
The combination of the smooth bezel, white metal, and non-serif roman salmon dial gives this president a very stealth contemporary look that is rare and highly desirable, and often the contrary appearance associated with Day-Dates.
